Join Canterbury Museum Research Fellow, Dr Richard Bullen to hear about the unique relationship forged between New Zealand and China by Rewi Alley and Canterbury Museum as recipient of his artefacts, paintings and ceramics. Dr Bullen is the head of Art History and Theory at the University of Canterbury. With Associate Professor James Beattie, University of Waikato, he is undertaking a three-year Marsden-funded research project investigating Canterbury Museum's Rewi Alley Collection, why and how it developed and the extent to which the gifting and display of artefacts encouraged favourable perceptions of ‘New China” in New Zealand during the Cold War.
