Franzi's art entails intricate details and magic of fine line drawings, as well as the expression of bold and bright paint strokes.

She grew up in Weimar, Germany, a small town steeped in the culture of classical poets, musicians and artists of the 18th century, as well as the more modern influence of the Bauhaus. She was drawn to New Zealand in 2006 by the laid back attitude and the wish of making dreams come true.

Franzi now combines drawing and painting, layering acrylic underpainting, ink or ballpoint pen drawing, and washes of acrylic or oil. This process is almost one of physically sculpting images out of canvas or paper, creating shadow and light by crosshatching, watching faces, figures and plants magically appear from the flat surface.

Then she gives the image a context by creating a story with paint around it. These stories are driven by a desire to unearth the mysteries that underlie our everyday lives; the small joyful moments, questioning our current busy way of life, celebrating the interweaving of everything visible and invisible, the coming and going, the light and dark, the giving and taking.

Some of the works displayed are the colour line drawing illustrations Franzi produced for the Koanga Institute, depicting the love of heritage seeds, vegetables, and flowers of New Zealand.
