Northart gallery

Frances Atkins’ latest exhibition marks 10 years (hence the Maori name Tekau) since she first exhibited in a gallery setting, also at Northart, for its inaugural Matariki show in 2006. Her collection spans a decade of creative practice and maps her identity as an urban Maori woman, a painter and a mother.

Frances’ work shows a finely tuned sensibility to her ever-changing social, physical and intellectual surroundings, with the most recent paintings taking on a ‘teenage soaked, social media tone’. Portraits feature strongly, and the artist enjoys re-orienting familiar figures in ambiguous situations by introducing crude graphic interventions. Tekau is one of two shows celebrating Matariki at Northart in June, the other being photographer Akura Makea-Pardington’s ‘Spirit of Place’.

They will share a special opening event on Saturday 4 June from 4pm to 6pm and then run daily 10am to 4pm, with the exception of Queen's Birthday 6 June.
