Originating in Andalucia (Southern Spain), the art of Flamenco is traditionally expressed with guitar, song, and dance. Flamenco expresses a wide range of emotions from playful joy to deep sadness and everything in between. The dance is extremely percussive with strong, rhythmic footwork and hand clapping. The hands, arms and body are used in a very expressive way and some of the typical movements are described as proud, beautiful, powerful and graceful. Flamenco has it’s own unique time signatures and the dancer learns to be “inside” the music.

Flamenco beginners classes are every thursday at 6.30pm

About Amira

Amira started her Flamenco training with Luis Ramon. He suggested that she teach his beginner classes and mentored her on the path of becoming a teacher. She has been teaching Flamenco dance in Auckland for 20 years. Her philosophy for teaching flamenco is based on a friendly and supportive atmosphere in classes and creating opportunities for students to gain performance experience if they wish. Some of her own performing highlights have been with Jose Yelamo from Cadiz and she enjoys regular collaboration with Auckland flamenco guitarists.
