The title of this joint show, Fabstract, sums up the work of both art practitioners but in different ways. Gaylard’s pieces are completely abstract but reference earlier European abstractionists in quirky and sometimes playful formats. Dornauf on the other hand features a combination of abstract notations along with more representational images that come from a variety of sources, whether art historical, design or illustrative based.

Behind Gaylard’s abstruse works are an array of ideas and concepts which he attempts to translate into painterly impasto forms. Coming from an academic background that takes in the world of politics and economics, these form the underlying basis for his colourful, heavily worked grid-like constructions.

Dornauf plays with elements of past and present, often juxtaposing them together on the same canvas. The ancient past becomes conflated with a world that picks up references to a more recent bygone age in an attempt to find some poignant confluence between them.
