Forest & Bird Manawatu are hosting a trip exploring the Otaki Gorge area. Newly-retired DOC employee, Ian Cooksley, will guide us on our journey giving a history of the Otaki Gorge as we go. Maybe we can also find the area filmed as the “Outer Shire” woods in the “Lord of the Ring” films.
Join us to explore the Otaki Gorge Road, lunch at Otaki Forks and walk one of the tracks around Otaki Forks.

What to bring: Please bring lunch, water, raincoat/warm clothes, stout footwear and walking poles if you usually use them – and do not forget your camera.

To car pool from Palmerston North, meet on Church St, opposite Centrepoint Theatre & Salvation Army Shop (on Railway land side) at 8.30am
If going straight to Otaki, meet in the car park on the left, south of Otaki river bridge, at 9.45am. Please advise Julia Panfylova if you will be meeting in Otaki.

About the trip: It is 18 km inland from Otaki township – approx. 1 1/4 hour drive from Palmerston North. The first 13km are asphalted, and the last 5km. is unsealed, narrow and winding.
