The oratorio "Elijah!" by renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn is built around the towering figure of the Old Testament prophet Elijah, engaged in the endless war of good versus evil as he faces King Ahab and his equally evil Queen Jezebel. Elijah tells all the people they have turned into a godless bunch of no-hopers and they had better mend their ways or they will be punished. Eventually a severe drought overtakes the land and in order to escape vengeance from Ahab, Elijah takes to the hills where he hides in a cave, spending endless hours praying for rain. Eventually Elijah returns to face the multitude and engages in a battle of wits with the prophets of the false god Baal. Mendelssohn's stirring music provides both choir and audience with spine-tingling occasions as the good v evil rages back and forth. The oratorio was a great success when first performed in Birmingham, England, in 1846, and has been a firm favourite with choral societies ever since. It is not often that audiences have the chance to hear such a major work and SACS is proud to bring this great work to South Auckland concert-goers and lovers of fine choral music.

The role of Elijah is sung by Joel Amosa, with soloists Gina Sanders, Emma Roxburgh, Mary Newman-Pound, Manase Latu and treble Luke Shackleton.
