Auckland Libraries is proud to present a series of curatorial lectures from the Alexander Turnbull Library.

Join us in the Whare Wānanga on Level 2 of Central City Library for a lecture from Dr Oliver Stead, Curator Drawings, Paintings & Prints at Alexander Turnbull Library, on ‘Sir Rex Nan Kivell and his collections – an exploration in discovery and access’.

Sir Rex Nan Kivell was a New Zealand-born collector and art dealer with a passion for the history of the South Pacific. His collection numbered hundreds of paintings and drawings of early Pacific subjects, and thousands more prints, maps, books and manuscripts. In the early 1950s there was a very real possibility that his collection might come to New Zealand as a donation. Instead it was acquired by the Australian Commonwealth.

This lecture looks at how images in Nan Kivell’s collections have continued to inspire new interest in post-colonial and indigenous studies in New Zealand and Australia, while at the same time becoming ever more popular and accessible through digital initiatives.

Oliver Stead is the author of a number of books on New Zealand art. He has held senior and specialist roles in several collecting institutions including Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Auckland War Memorial Museum, National Library of Australia and the James Wallace Art Trust. Nan Kivell was the subject of his PhD thesis in art history.
