Dementia is a growing concern for many New Zealanders; even more so in recent times with the bombshell that our beloved All Blacks seem to end up suffering from a higher proportion of dementia than the general public. To assuage some of these fears, and provide advice and support, Dementia Auckland are making their specialist dementia key workers available to the public at the Memory Shop in Takapuna.

From June 13, one of Dementia Auckland’s caring and experienced specialist dementia key-workers will be based at the Memory Shop on the second Monday of every month. This will give locals an opportunity to come and gain advice both around preventing dementia and around supporting someone with dementia.

The specialist dementia key workers will be able to answer the community’s questions, give out information, and generally support anyone who may be unsure about dementia, how it can be prevented, and what kind of support is needed for those who have it and their families and friends.

With 15,000 people currently with dementia in the greater Auckland region – a number research predicts will double over the next 15 to 20 years – the need for information around dementia is paramount. Two in three New Zealanders are affected by dementia in some way throughout their lifetime, yet there simply isn’t enough accessible information out there about it; this is why having a specialist dementia keyworker on hand is so important to the Auckland community.

“We’re hoping that having specialist dementia keyworkers accessible through the Memory Shop will be valuable to the community at large,” says Rod Perkins, Chief Executive of Dementia Auckland. “For those in the North Shore community, this is a chance to learn about something that affects so many families, and to participate in improving the accessibility of information to those who need it.”

The Memory Shop sells donated clothing, shoes, books, and homewares, with all proceeds going to Dementia Auckland. This enables the organisation to expand their support services to meet the growing need that New Zealand faces with an ever-expanding elderly population.
