The Cultural Festival 2016 celebrates the vibrant art and culture of Auckland’s local Asian Communities. Take part and enjoy musical performances, martial arts showcases, arts and crafts, tea ceremonies, traditional games and more at Auckland Museum.

This year’s fifth annual event celebrates Chinese, Japanese and Korean culture. Over the weekend of September 17-18, visitors can enjoy free drop-in activities, performances and demonstrations showcasing ancient traditions through to modern cultural innovations.

The Museum is proud to include screenings of two films from the beloved Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli, My Neighbour Totoro and Ponyo as part of the Cultural Festival programme.

Enjoy a variety of hands-on activities like Korean & Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, and a have a go at playing traditional games and instruments. Admire the costumes of Japanese inspired cosplayers (costume players), from The Graphic Novel Café.

Take part in Chinese and Japanese tea ceremonies and learn about the history of these centuries-old traditions. Music lovers will enjoy an interactive talk and performance about the traditional instrument of Guzheng with expert Xia Jia (supported by NZTrio). Hear Japanese taiko drumming, traditional Korean instruments kayageum & daegeum, and watch traditional dances and martial arts demonstrations.

The festival concludes on Sunday evening with the Cultural Festival Concert in the Museum’s Event Centre. This year’s concert will celebrate the festival’s fifth anniversary and mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese migrants to Aotearoa.

Come along and enjoy the rich traditions of three of Auckland’s cultures at the Cultural Festival 2016, presented in collaboration with community groups from around Auckland.
