Crossing the Bridge was created by Ashburton-based anthropologist, Sophie-Claire Violette, in collaboration with Christchurch-based photographer, Petra Mingneau and with the help of Lucy Holland; an art teacher at the Ashburton College and Vanesa Paredes; an Argentinian film-maker previously based in Ashburton and now based in Christchurch.

This international, collaborative project focuses on the stories and lives of migrants from around the world who have chosen to settle in Ashburton and build lives their lives in this booming rural town.

Through astute portrait photography, in depth filmed interviews and using a strong anthropological lens to explore identity and belonging in our local migrant communities, Crossing The Bridge is a platform for local migrants living in Ashburton to become empowered to find their public voice and share their stories with the world.

Crossing The Bridge takes the format of a multidisciplinary public exhibition; presenting portrait photography of the participants, a short documentary and photographs taken by the migrants themselves of their lives in Ashburton.

The exhibition is open to the public.
