By Dave Hare,
I asked Simon Cooper what the Cooper’s Stripping Roadshow is about, “The Roadshow is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition, travelling throughout New Zealand. We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays. We also have a demonstration area where we will show you how to strip paint and varnish without the need for sanding.

Bring a photo of your project and we’ll select a similar finish to strip with you. Better still, bring it with you, or a piece of it, a chair - a drawer - unscrew a window sash - a door - a piece of architrave - even your project car and now we can really show you the ‘No Sanding’ advantage of using Cooper’s. There’s ample parking outside, so impress us with what you bring along.”

I wanted to learn more about Simon and the Strip Club, so I dug a little deeper...

In the early 80’s Simon was a cabinet maker with a boutique shop in Wellington making and restoring fine furniture.

Disillusioned with the time wasted when he used conventional paint strippers, he was determined to develop a product that was easy to use and would make sanding obsolete; his focus was to reuse the sanding that’s already there.

He says, “Why sand, when the person who made it did it for you! Simply dissolve the old finish with my Stripper then rinse the surface clean with my Flusher, it’s that easy”

Over 30 years later, Simon’s stripping system is still family owned, Kiwi made and has been used on well over 70,000 homes throughout New Zealand and Australia.

I asked Simon about the health problems in removing lead based paints from surfaces like weatherboards and windows that have been baked hard by the sun. Simon says “Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern”
