For many years Christine Hellyar's practice has been involved in exploring Pacific cultures and the objects collected on Cook's voyages. This culminated in the exhibition Mrs. Cook's Kete, with Maureen Lander, at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford.

Recently she has turned her attention to the things that were brought to the Pacific on these voyages. Her 8 - year project Change/Exchange, recently acquired by Auckland Art Gallery, is an example. Red Treasures from the Upper World, 2016, extends these concerns, investigating how the objects were carried on Cook's ships and stored in Pacific houses.

Christine is a major New Zealand artist who has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. She taught at the Elam School of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland and lived and traveled in the U.K. and Europe. Recent solo exhibitions include the Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland, with participation in group exhibitions at Auckland Art Gallery and the Alexander Turnbull Library.

The artist will be at the opening Exhibition ends Saturday October 15.
Tivoli summer hours: Tuesdays - Saturdays 10 - 5.
