MDNZ is conducting two public seminars in Christchurch.

Local Ophthalmologist, Dr James Borthwick, will provide up-to-date information on treatments and research and provide guidance on living with MD. There will also be displays of low vision aids and information packs will be available on the day.

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a chronic eye disease that is currently the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand. One in 7 people over 50 years of age have some evidence of it and the incidence increases with age with 1 in 4 people aged 80+ living with vision loss. Alarmingly it is estimated that the number of people with MD will increase by 70% by 2030.

Macular degeneration (MD) affects the central vision and this impacts on a person’s ability to drive, read, watch television, undertake hobbies requiring fine work, access websites and even recognise faces. Loss of vision impacts on lifestyle and independent ageing and is associated with the risks of: falls and fracturing hips; developing and increases in depression; inability to access health services and earlier admission to nursing homes. Consequently, people with macular degeneration experience significant emotional harm while the country incurs incalculable financial costs.

Many people dismiss the early warning signs of MD as a normal part of the ageing process, simply because they don’t know what to look for. Recent NZ research* identifies that among the at risk population, aged 50+, 72% have heard of MD but only 59% understand that it is an eye disorder. Such low awareness is a tragedy – early detection saves sight.

Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ) is a Charitable Trust with the vision to reduce the incidence and impact of MD in New Zealand. This is delivered to the community by increasing awareness, delivering information and education and providing support to those with MD.

To register to attend this Seminar phone 0800 MACULA (622 852) or email info@mdnz.org.nz indicating which session you would like to attend.
