This year marks the 100th year since the death of Charles Douglas, and Hokitika is hosting a weekend of events to celebrate his life.

Charles Douglas was a significant Westland explorer and personality. For 40 years he roamed and surveyed the West Coast region of New Zealand. Described as quiet and shy by his companions, Douglas was endurance personified. His diaries, with their accounts of near starvation, flooded rivers, and snowfalls are riveting reading.

The celebration is a collaborative effort between DOC, the Hokitika Museum, the Hokitika Regent Theatre, Heritage Hokitika, Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio, Heritage New Zealand and LINZ.
