Whangarei Music Society warmly invite music-lovers to a luscious exploration of Mozart's Violin sonatas with fortepiano, presented by Catherine Mackintosh and Douglas Mews, as part of the 2016 Chamber Music New Zealand Encompass Series Tour. The Duo Sonatas for violin and fortepiano, will also feature readings of letters penned by the Mozart family.

Mackintosh and Mews have been described as having, "...A lustrous tone, fleet technique and an unerring way with a melodic line," by The Chicago Tribune, and viewed as an "... Alert, stylish account of the E major concerto [that] would surely have pleased Bach himself," by The Independent; Mackintosh and Mews are also applauded by Gramophone for their, "...Lovely unaffected performances with a disarming air of spontaneity, yet a sense that every detail has been shaped with care and understanding."

Overview:
On this tour UK violinist Catherine Mackintosh presents a programme of Mozart violin sonatas with well-known New Zealand organist, harpsichordist and fortepiano player, Douglas Mews. During May they will perform in four New Zealand centres as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2016 Encompass Series. This Whangarei concert is presented by Whangarei Music Society.

Over the past 4 decades, Catherine Mackintosh took part in a fascinating era of discovery, pioneering many ground-breaking projects played for the first time on original instruments. After a conventional training at the Royal College of Music, Catherine took up the viol and baroque violin, attracted by the expressive possibilities that early instruments can bring to pre-classical repertoire. She was leader of the Academy of Ancient Music and directed the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, of which she is a founder member. Her extensive recordings have been acclaimed and loved.

On this tour she presents a programme of Mozart violin sonatas with well-known New Zealand organist, harpsichordist and fortepiano player, Douglas Mews. Douglas is a freelance musician in Wellington, teaching organ and harpsichord at the New Zealand School of Music. He graduated from Auckland University with a M.Mus in organ and harpsichord, having studied with the late Anthony Jennings.

This was followed by two years’ post-graduate harpsichord study with Bob van Asperen at the Hague Conservatorium. As harpsichordist he has given many recitals in NZ as well as performing with various visiting musicians, including baroque violinist Stanley Ritchie, early flautist Rachel Brown, singer Richard Wistreich, recorder player Peter Holtslag, and violist Nobuko Imai.
