Joni Mitchell's Mingus album, a seminal recording in the jazz vocal world, was not (understandably) a commercial hit for Joni and was viewed as 'damaging' for her career by her record company at the time. Despite the warnings, in 1979, she released the work that has gifted the jazz world with one of it's most enduring, pioneering, and seminal recordings.

Mingus composed 6 songs for Mitchell who writes, It was as if I had been standing by a river one toe in the water feeling it out and Charlie came by and pushed me in. Sink or swim, him laughing at me, dog paddling around in the currents of black classical music. Mingus got to hear all the songs except for 'God Must Be a Boogie Man', which was completed two days after his death.

Mingus was one of the most loved and influential recordings in Caro Manins' early musical life. She says, "When I first heard it, I was just mesmerised by the colours, the abstract, beautiful sounds like I hadn't heard before, and of course the phenomenal substance of Joni Mitchell's storytelling".

She brings this project to CJC as a homage to the great man and the great lady, and with a great band of Manins, Crayford, McArthur and Samsom.

Every Wednesday CJC presents a featured member artist or international guest. We are currently located in the basement bar at The Albion Hotel, 119 Hobson St until further notice - please check the website for changes.
