Catalyst Trust

At this Catalyst Trust talk, Dr Tara Duncan from the University of Otago’s Department of Tourism will use recent research and industry information to discuss working holiday makers, WWOOFERs, flashpackers, the growing Asian market and more to provide an overview of the budget backpacker.

“Backpackers are frequently also working holiday makers, visiting friends and relatives, and potential longer term employees. They contribute in many ways to local economies and communities as they travel, study, work and volunteer”, says Dr Duncan.

At a time when Tourism New Zealand is renewing its focus on attracting backpackers to our shores, Dr Duncan will address who these young people are, what they do when they are here and why they remain important to the tourism sector. “Recognising that backpackers are often more than travellers is essential, especially for destinations such as Queenstown”, she says.

Dr Tara Duncan joined the Department of Tourism at the University of Otago in 2007, where she is a Lecturer. She has worked in a number of tourism industry roles, including three years in the HR team at Whistler Blackcomb, the world-class Canadian ski resort. As well as researching young budget travellers, Dr Duncan is also investigating the role of women in the growth of the Central Otago wine region.
