Aristophanes’s 2,000 year old play is a ribald and rumbustious comedy and ever-popular anti-war satire. The women of Greece are weary of the 30 plus years war between Athens and Sparta. Led by Lysistrata, they decide to take control of the situation by capturing the Acropolis, seat of Athenian wealth, and by going on a sex strike. There is to be no more love-making until peace has been established. Suffering severely, the men agree to a peaceful settlement, with their wives and with their enemies.

The play is a romp, fast-paced, risqué, over the top, even lewd at times. Yet the character of Lysistrata and the eternal anti-war message gives it a satirical edge. In the USA, for instance, in protest at the Iraqi war, some 60 productions of “Lysistrata” were produced concurrently across the Nation.

Audition Information:
This will be an Ensemble production and the rehearsal process will be strongly Collaborative. The purpose of the auditions is to discover the potential of each person auditioning, not, as normally, to definitively cast specific parts. (there are, of course, a few very clear characterisations; e.g.

Lysistrata, the leader; Lampito, the muscular Spartan; the pompous Commissioner) Overall, both the females and the males are caricatures, the first a bit “girly” versus the obvious “machoness” or ”misogynism” of the latter. The challenge for cast and director will be, in rehearsal, to create the individuality, and hence the comedy, in each separate character. Therefore, auditions will be in groups (4-6).

Age Range:
Women: Late teens through to forties.
Men: Late teens to sixties.

The aim will be to see:
- how people handle group work and interaction;
- how flexible or versatile people can be, as in playing different types of characters; (there may be some doubling up of parts);
- Movement, physicalisation and vocalisation;
- Sense of Comedy.

So, it is not relevant to talk about “a Part”, or Parts, that you are “going for”. We will be a team and the character allocation, with one or two exceptions, will develop very quickly through Rehearsals. Above all, we want a team of people who are determined to have a lot of fun, as they help design, shape, and create, together, a very funny comedic night’s entertainment! (with a barb to it of course!).
