For one magical starry night, jump on board a free Art Night bus and catch special late night openings at galleries across the Wellington region.

City Gallery Wellington and Te Papa (Wellington), Pātaka (Porirua), Mahara Gallery (Waikanae), The Dowse (Lower Hutt) and Expressions (Upper Hutt) join forces to open late and celebrate Matariki with live music, exhibitions and special events after dark.

Art Night: Pō Whakaatu Toi is winter’s must-see event for contemporary art-lovers and an exciting night out for the whole family.

So bring the whānau, and make the most of this opportunity to visit galleries across the Wellington region. And it’s all free!

Free Art Night buses will run in a circuit across the region. We’ll be hosting you on board with information on what to expect at each gallery. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at most galleries.

City Gallery Wellington
Tours of our exhibitions Francis Upritchard: Jealous Saboteurs and Bullet Time, screenings, music, family activities and more at Tuatara Open Late.

The Dowse
Awe-inspiring porcelain installation by renowned Chinese artist Liu Jianhua, South American beats by Muchos Gringos, Dowse 101 tours, musical antics upstairs in our family exhibition Humm, plus more!

Expressions Whirinaki
Free soup, live music and StarLab; an inflatable planetarium for one night only.

Pātaka Art + Museum
Performances by Le Moana contemporary dance troupe, Taura Here, MaraTK, the New Zealand Harp Duo, star-gazing in our star dome with the Māori Astronomers Society and talks by Stonehenge Aotearoa.

Te Papa
Dress in period costume and have your photo taken, write your own version of a national anthem and have it performed or star-gaze through a telescope and enjoy a glass of wine.

Mahara Gallery
Kapa haka at 4pm then a starry walkway lights the way to Whakarongotai Marae. Miro open, live music and star weaving. Young artists, tours and hangi in marae.
