“A highlight of emerging jazz of Australia and New Zealand."

- 5:30pm - Workshop
- 7:30pm - Concert

Described as “a great blowing band with dense heads, occasional free and floating segments, room for solos and some great grooves” (Canberra Jazz) this leading Australian-New Zealand jazz band draws from modern New York jazz to Swedish indie pop and European free improvised music. Audiences are first drawn in by introspective, timbral improvisations and then set to foot-tapping with danceable beats, songlike melodies and fiery solos.

Antipodes was formed after a chance meeting of some of the members at a jam session in Berlin in 2013. The musical connection became immediately apparent and they began writing and performing original compositions together. This year's Freedman Jazz finalist, Sweeting from Sydney is a pianist known for his indelible work with a jazz-improv group the Grey Wing Trio. Saxophonist Baxendale, a key force behind the burgeoning Kiwi band The Jac, is one of the most energetic forces coming from the Wellington jazz scene.

Guitarist Callum Allardice is achieving overdue recognition as a performer and composer of note, having received the inaugural APRA Best Jazz Composition Award. The band also features formidable musicians from the Sydney jazz scene: National Jazz Awards Finalist Tom Botting on double bass and Sydney’s leading drummer Tim Geldens.

Workshop:
Join the band before the show for a special workshop for both musicians and individuals wanting to know a bit more about the internationally collaborative nature of Antipodes.

Antipodes are offering a chance for music students to submit their compositions for the band to perform as part of the workshop, to demonstrate the process of rehearsing new music and finding pathways for improvising on new material.

"We hope this workshop will provide valuable insight for musicians, especially those interested in writing and composing original music for improvisors. We also hope that it will provide an insight for non-musicians on how an improvising group operates, giving them a greater understanding and appreciation of the music."

The band will perform a selection of the music they receive at the workshop. Compositions should be submitted in pdf form to jake.baxendale@gmail.com by October 1st.
