Alexander Gavrylyuk has been described as “one of the greatest discoveries of the past decade. Every time he enchants the public with incredible virtuosity and thought provoking playing” — De Telegraph 2015.

The Waikanae Music Society is proud to present New Zealand’s only solo recital appearance by this outstanding young Ukrainian-born pianist. Two years ago, the Waikanae Music Society audience was thrilled and enchanted by the playing of Gavrylyuk, a pianist praised as “an extraordinary talent” by none other than the great Vladimir Ashkenazy. His eagerly anticipated return visit comes thanks to the generosity of the Deane Endowment Trust, and with the assistance of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Originally from the Ukraine, Gavrylyuk moved to Australia at the age of 13. His first concert performance was at the age of nine, and he later won a series of prestigious piano competitions including the Vladimir Horowitz Competition. Most notably, he took both the coveted Gold Medal as well as the award for Best Performance of a Classical Concerto at the internationally renowned Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition.

Gavrylyuk now has an international music career. He has performed solo recitals in London, Vienna, Zurich, Berlin and Sydney. He has played with many major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. His recordings include Prokofiev’s five Piano Concertos and all four Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, which have received high critical praise.

In 2015 and 2106, Gavrylyuk’s demanding schedule includes concerto performances with Valeriy Gergiev and the Rotterdam Philharmonic as part of the Gergiev Festival, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, NHK Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra amongst others. He will also give recitals in Toulouse, Fribourg, Moscow, Minneapolis, New York and London as well as giving recitals with Janine Jansen throughout Europe.

The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available, or tickets can be purchased at Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach or Lush Design Gallery in Raumati.
