Roger Hall, our most prolific and successful playwright, magically analyses with great accuracy the foibles and anxieties of middle New Zealand and he does so often with great hilarity.

A Shortcut to Happiness is a recent work (2012) and deals with two elements in ours, and Western Society – ageing and immigration. Natasha is a recent arrival from Moscow and needs to supplement her meagre income as a cleaner. She sets up a Folk Dancing Class in a local church hall and a variety of middle-aged punters sign on. In between the folk dances of Greece, Russia. Israel, etc. the various characters reveal their inner desires as they face the downhill end of their journey on this planet.

Will Natasha escape from the ill-paid drudgery of her thankless dusting and luxing? And when did she last pay income tax? Thank goodness one of her dance pupils is a retired accountant and single!

All’s well that ends well as Roger Hall lowers the curtain on yet another insightful New Zealand comedy.
