New Zealand actress and singer Ali Harper is bringing her one-woman show ‘A Doris Day Special’ to the Rangiora Town Hall in October.

Three years in the making, ‘A Doris Day Special’ has played to sold-out crowds at Christchurch’s Court Theatre where it made its debut in April and May. Since then Ali has performed it at the Southlands Festival of the Arts in Invercargill as well as in New Plymouth, Hamilton, Waipawa and Palmerston North.

"I have found wherever I go, everyone loves Doris Day. People tell me how they have vivid memories sitting in their grandparent’s house on a Sunday and watching Doris Day films. Her freshness, her vivacious personality, beautiful clothes and gorgeous films and songs are all pure escapism for so many."

"A Doris Day Special’ transports the audience to a Hollywood Television Studio in 1971 where Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff aka Doris Day is filming her very own Television Special.

"Those Television Specials were an amazing vehicle for many stars in the '60s and '70s; John Denver, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, Barbra Streisand all bought that fourth wall down and showed a side of themselves that was very rarely seen by their fans."

Ali knows only too well what it’s like to bring down that fourth wall. Her solo shows ‘Legendary Divas,’ ‘Naughty and Nice’ and ‘Bombshells’ have had much success around New Zealand and in New York, (Ali received the Best Actress Award at the United Solo Festival for ‘Bombshells’ in 2014) and earlier this year Ali performed ‘Legendary Divas’ and ‘Naughty and Nice’ in Australia and South America on the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary II.

Ali has assembled a stellar team for ‘A Doris Day Special’ with Director Stephanie McKellar-Smith, and Musical Arrangements by Michael Bell. The Big Band and Strings ensemble recordings are conducted by Rodger Fox with a line-up of NZ’s best musicians.
