Waiting for Godot is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the theatre of the Absurd and when originally produced in London, a most controversial play. However, it was also voted as the most significant English language play of the 20th century.

Samuel Beckett created a situation in which two tramps, indecisive and incapable of action, suffer and wait hopefully for help. Will it ever come ?

Critic Harold Hobson wrote "It was immediately clear that 'Waiting for Godot' had the esssence of , a climax, several star parts, rousing rhetoric and a dilemma. It had pity and deep understanding.
Samuel Beckett had an ironic vision of the world which brought him fame and a Nobel Prize.
