“The stories of the people flow through this place.”

From the students of ‘THEA 301: Company’ at Victoria University of Wellington comes a performance about a landscape and its people: Tributary.

Set at a riverside not bound by time or space, Tributary delivers a unique and diverse piece of New Zealand theatre. As paths cross and generations transcend time, our characters begin to understand what it means to be a New Zealander. Exploring themes such as belonging and difference, whanau, gender myths, mental health, body image and acceptance, the show challenges the idea that we all have the same human experience. Inspired by diverse texts - from local myths to Toa Fraser’s classic play Bare -the play's fantastical landscape weaves itself through individual stories of personal encounters from our company's own whakapapa.

Tributary invites the audience to explore the undeniable Kiwi fascination with cultural cringe and identity. Searching for links among the characters and their stories, audiences will look through an objective window to view society, as we struggle against visions of a homogenous identity as a nation and as individuals.
