Transformed Earth

A display of ceramic works by two of Wellington’s most inspiring potters
From 6TH. April to 12TH. April, at Thistle Hall in upper Cuba Street.

‘Transformed Earth’, will showcase the work of two potters, Shane Gallagher and Maurice Bennett.
This is extensive range of work from both artists will make use of the whole gallery space.

The title of the show comes from the idea of the potter as an alchemist; one who transforms something of low value into something precious. Both artists share an interest in the remarkable chemistry between the elements drawn from the earth, extended by the human hand and transformed by fire.

The works of Shane Gallagher, who has a background in painting and ceramics, draws from abstract expressionism movement and ‘Wabi Sabi Suki,’ the basic principles of Japanese beauty, which can be interpreted as ‘imperfection moving towards balance’.

Maurice Bennett will be exhibiting a range of his volcanic inspired forms based on the bowl, His work interprets the natural environment of New Zealand, whether it is the rugged coastal landforms or the geothermal craters and mud pools of the central North Island. Inspired by the works of Len Castle, New Zealand’s most renowned potter, Maurice challenges form over function and brings to life the raw energy and truth of clay, a material of the earth.

The works on display will have a wide appeal and capture the imaginations of people from a range of backgrounds. Shane and Maurice are Wellington artists working with local materials to create exciting and evocative ceramic forms.
