'Knowing Your Ancestors – a Thames Special' by Barrie Allom

Last year this speaker, in conjunction with the Wairarapa Archive, published a biography of Albert James Allom (1825-1909). Five of its twenty-one entertaining chapters are devoted to his life in Thames (1870-1889). He was a conspicuous and sometimes controversial figure as Registrar of Mines, Clerk of the Court, and a Justice of the Peace – also a pro-active citizen in numerous spheres including acclimatisation, school education, and hospital administration.

Barrie Allom will speak primarily about the experience he had and intriguing discoveries he made in coming to know his great grandfather, including snippets about his time in Thames. He encourages others to do likewise, not only dates and achievements, but the very nature of a person, warts and all. It may seem like a chore but soon becomes an adventure.
