'Hauraki-Coromandel War Memorials: their Symbolism and Contribution to our Region's History' by David Wilton, Historian and Researcher

The author has recently collected photographs and historical data relating to about 50 World War I memorials in the Hauraki - Coromandel region, as part of the WW100 project. The results of this study were presented to a conference entitled "Memorialisation and the Nation" recently held at Otago University and the talk will outline this presentation and other issues discussed at the conference.

Topics include the lack of awareness of the existence of many memorials, and dozens of “false positives” and “false negatives” relating to soldiers’ names. In the Hauraki - Coromandel region, at least, the quality of IM and KM relating to war memorials can only be described as poor. On the other hand, the names listed on the various memorials provided a rich source of data on “local” soldiers that was not readily apparent from other sources.
