Travel with Steam Incorporated on this Anzac Weekend excursion to the Central Plateau. This special train will be hauled by WWI memorial locomotive Ab608 “Passchendaele”.

Sit back and relax while we take you through the Manawatu & Rangitikei areas to your destination of either Waiouru or Ohakune. Travel over many impressive viaducts, enjoy the landscape of the Rangitikei River Valley and the mountain vistas of the Central Plateau.

The train will be hauled by newly restored WWI Memorial steam locomotive Ab608 “Passchendaele”, and we will be using our vintage carriages, many with open balcony ends. Ab608 is 100 years old this year having being built in the Christchurch Addington Workshops in 1915.

You can choose from one of two main destinations, Waiouru or Ohakune.

At Waiouru you have the option of visiting the National Army Museum. This is New Zealand’s most comprehensive army museum with a unique collection of military exhibits, memorabilia and public research material. Must see exhibits include:
- New – Medal Repository
- Tears on Greenstone Memorial
- Life-like displays
- Iconic military hardware
- Comprehensive weapons collection
- And just opening in April: Ripping Yarns from the Peninsula: True stories of Gallipoli.

The Army Museum is a 350 metre (5 minute walk) from the railway station. A café and gift shop are also located at the museum. We have also arranged for a prepacked lunch at the museum. This would include a wrap or sandwich, muffin, piece of fruit and a drink and needs to be pre ordered. Cost $10.

There will also be the option (subject to sufficient numbers) of a ride in a M548 Tracked Cargo Carrier that is fitted with aircraft seats. Admission Adult $12 ($10 extra for M548 ride). Child $6.

For those selecting Ohakune as your destination we expect a 1.5 hour stopover here while we turn the loco on the turntable and allow the southbound Northern Explorer train to pass through. We hope to arrange a buffet lunch at the Powderhorn Chateau 300 metres from the station.

The local Ohakune rail group will have their museum open. Just along the roadway at the Waiouru end of the station. Admission by donation. Exhibits include:
- An exhibition on the Tangiwai Rail Disaster of Christmas Eve 1953, New Zealand’s worst ever rail disaster
- The history and future of the North Island Main Trunk 1870 – 2013
- Raurimu Spiral and Main Trunk Milestones
- Railway Control Units (Post War)
- Semaphore Signals, early workers’ cabin, tools and historic photos

The train will include a buffet counter selling burgers, sausages, sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and a souvenir counter for all sorts of railway and steam memorabilia.

We will make several other stops during the day for a leg stretch or photo opportunity.

Return fares are Adult $135, Child $85

You can board the train at Palmerston North, Feilding and Marton.

Please note that it is only possible to select either Waiouru or Ohakune as your destination. Not both.

Departs Palmerston North 7.30am, Feilding 7.50am, Marton 8.40am.
