Gavin Wallace, President of the Wainuiomata Historical Museum Society, talks about his research on early settler families and the huge estates they acquired in Wainuiomata.

Wainuiomata was part of the large parcel of land purchased by the New Zealand Company in the disputed sale of 1839 that followed the arrival of the ship Tory. Unlike many other parts of the parcel, Wainuiomata was devoid of Maori occupation, and the Company surveyors started with a clean slate. The land was desirable, and speculation was rife. Settlers moved onto the land to establish farms, and a few would accumulate vast estates. Some of these estates were two or three times the area of the Miramar Peninsula. They have now all gone.

Using extensive maps, Gavin Wallace has traced the changes that have occurred based on the few families that acquired most of the land, and made and lost fortunes in the process.
