*Screening in the Beehive Theatre*

Part of the 2015 Festival of Parliament, Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision presents a lively look at the workings of Parliament over a hundred years, 1910 – 2010, through moving images. The first screening, on Friday 31 July, will be preceded by nibbles and a cash bar from 5.30pm.

Over 20 film clips show a wide range of occasions at Parliament: the proclamation of King George V in 1910, Prime Minister Massey’s funeral in 1925, honours being bestowed on WWII veterans, openings of Parliament, state visits and royal receptions, including one for Prince Charles and Lady Diana in 1984.

President Lyndon Johnston speaks in Parliament on peace, democracy and Vietnam, while anti-war protesters rally in Parliament grounds. Another film records the petition to Save Manapouri being presented at Parliament in 1970.

Parliament grounds has been a focus for large public demonstrations. It was the final destination of the hīkoi on Māori Land that began in the far north and ended at Parliament in 1975. Television clips cover the thousands of submissions supporting homosexual law reform delivered to Parliament in 1985, the 2003 tractor riding stunt up Parliament steps, and GE protestors being evicted from Parliament.

A newsreel explores the architectural history of Parliament buildings and the Beehive’s construction and opening.

Election night television coverage from 1975 shows the new computers used to analyse election results being tested, and a range of humorous election advertising. This includes "Elections" (1954, made by Pacific Films), which illustrates pre-television election nights with people clustered around the radio.

All this and more in this 70-minute programme.
