Beneath silvery streaks of moonlight, these arresting young people are confronted with having to leave something behind before being able to change, grow and move forward.

A trio of brothers struggle to find footing after the passing of their father, best friends come clean about the racial divide that flows between them, a young man wrestles with the confusion of his gender identity, and an Instagram starlet flails and almost drowns in a sea of social-media emptiness.

Through highly collaborative and process-focused workshops, Tauwhirowhiro - A Changing Moon was created as a means to strengthen the students’ artistic identities in the hope that they may enter the industry with confidence, mana and a hunger to tell their own self-determined stories. The students have been asked to deeply examine who they are, to ask questions about how they have arrived at this present place, and to consider the intriguing prospects of the future. “The bold and fearless way that young people take risks and embrace the unpredictable dynamics of what lies ahead is not only incredibly inspiring, but also gives insightful wisdom into what it means to openly confront change,” says collaborator Cat Ruka.

MIT Performing Artists restage their Matariki work for Urbanesia under the umbrella of Talanoa MIT.
