Peter Alsop, a keen collector of New Zealand art and early advertising, will give a special talk at Rotorua Museum on Sunday 6 September 2015 at 2pm.

As the lead author of the coffee table book Selling the Dream: The Art of Early New Zealand Tourism, Alsop will share his passion for vintage tourism posters in the exhibition of the same name.

During the talk Alsop will take the audience on a vibrant rediscovery of the advertising that significantly shaped New Zealand’s identity until the 1960s. From 1901, when New Zealand took a bold step in establishing the Department of Tourism and Health Resorts (the first such government department in the world) to the development of a New Zealand tourism brand and how this was marketed to the world.

Through striking travel posters artists celebrated the raw beauty of what New Zealand had to offer and revealed the uniqueness of the New Zealand culture and environment.

Peter Alsop's infectious enthusiasm for these early advertising images has shown the cultural importance and visibility of this early 20th century commercial art.

Selling the Dream is developed and toured by Canterbury Museum and includes more than 50 lithographs and silk-screen prints produced by some of New Zealand’s leading commercial artists between the 1920s and 1960s.

Selling the Dream is on display at Rotorua Museum until 11 October 2015.

Entry to both the talk and the exhibition is included in Rotorua Museum’s admission price, which is free for Rotorua residents with relevant ID. General Museum admission: adults $20, seniors $18 and children $8. For further information please contact Rotorua Museum, phone 07 350 1814 or email Rotorua.museum@rotorualc.nz
