More than seventy members of 5/7 Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, will conduct charter parades in New Plymouth and Stratford on 8 August 2015, to mark the centenary of the Battle for Chunuk Bair, and commemorate the service and sacrifice of those from the Taranaki region during the battle.

5/7 Battalion is the descendent of Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) William Malone’s Wellington Battalion. LTCOL Malone was killed on 8 August 1915, during the Battle for Chunuk Bair, and had spent much of his adult life living and working in Stratford and New Plymouth.

The Charter is a British tradition which is still widely practised throughout the Commonwealth. The parade will renew the Charter which grants 5/7 Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, the freedom of the city, or the right and privilege to march through the streets of Stratford and New Plymouth with drums beating, band playing, colours flying, bayonets fixed, and swords drawn. The granting of freedom by a city or borough is a privilege that should not be given or accepted lightly, and extends the close relationship between the Unit and the people.

The parade will start at Page Street and conclude at the Malone Memorial Gates. Wet weather venue: Stratford War Memorial Centre, 55 Miranda Street, Stratford.
