“The energy is magnificent: Stan jumps across stage, he howls, he gestures with his hands to add emphasis to the story he is laying out before you.” - Tone Deaf

After a brief run with school and limited success with women, Skyscraper Stan picked up a guitar and discovered the only thing he was any good at was writing songs. Moving from his native Auckland to Melbourne at the age of 21, he set about serenading anyone who would listen. After building up a band and hitting the pub scene for a while he then left Australia to embark on a musical odyssey of the Southern USA, eventually washing up in Mexico, broke and hungry. Melbourne called him back and this time he was ready. Upon arriving back he assembled a new band dubbed the Commission Flats, for the council housing that dominates Melbourne’s skyline. The gigs flooded in and the group quickly gained a reputation for their dynamic live show.

Richard Wise and Martin Schilov make up the rock solid rhythm section, chugging along under the cheeky and often jaw dropping guitar work of Stan’s younger cousin Oskar Herbig while Stan picks at his old guitar and “...dances like a drowning huntsman…”

In October 2013 they released an EP Tall Stories which enjoyed five weeks on the AMRAP NOW charts, hitting a high of No. 3 for 2 consecutive weeks. Their debut album, Last year’s Tune (a crowd funded project) was released in March 2015.

“The most exciting thing about Skyscraper is that what they are punching out is nearly completely different than what anyone else is doing right now.” -Clicks and Cuts

Helping celebrate the launch of the festival alongside Skyscraper Stan will be the gothic infused alt. country of Dead Little Penny. Hayley Smith’s haunting love songs and stomping country tales of sex, drugs and debauchery are told with the backing of Goodshirt's Rodney Fisher, Swampland's Tony Daunt and Kiss Me’s Simon Buxton. Brendan & Alison Turner (formerly of Bond Street Bridge) will be opening proceedings with their original folk, bluegrass flavoured harmonies. The Miltones are also in the line up.
