Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts continues its celebration of 18 years as a commercial dealer gallery presenting evocative art and crafts by regional and selected New Zealand artists. Palmerston North-born Maori artist Wayne Hansen is exhibiting “Soul Is Eternal”, an installation of 12 works of pyrography on MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) measuring from under a metre square to 2 metres by 1.5 metres.

Hanson writes: “My name is Wayne Hansen, I am 48 years old with six children and one grandchild. I was born in Palmerston North and have lived in Taupo for 30 years. I am a self-taught artist who many consider an ‘Outsider’ as my work is not main-stream. I have been doing art using wood burning tools and techniques for 22 years.

“’Soul is Eternal’ took me 12 years to complete in between pieces for gallery exhibitions, commission work and being a solo parent. My work has been in the top galleries in New Zealand and has been sold internationally.

“This exhibition is a story about our souls’ experiences and our connection with the living environment. The native bush represents ‘Soul’, the native birds represent ‘Spirit’ and the changing from fern to flax means the changing from physical consciousness to spiritual consciousness. The story is there to wake up the soul and remember the spirit in us and everything around us.”

Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts will host a reception for the artist on Saturday 29th August from 1 to 3pm at the gallery, 33 George Street, Palmerston North. The public is warmly invited to attend, meet the artist and view Wayne’s very special artwork. The exhibition will continue through September 12th.
