Level 1/147 Cuba Street

Handlettering is a special discipline. It allows a very particular form of visual expression that is often not possible through conventional digital typography. Its most exciting potential is when the physical form of the lettering carries as much intent as the text itself—the idea of ‘type as image’, or concrete poetry. Another advantage of the hand-drawn letter is the ever-present possibility of irregularity or even accident (happy or otherwise). When language is coupled with expressive and sympathetic typography, it enters that rare territory where type and image and meaning are equal partners. This workshop is designed to explore these possibilities and to create typography that is immediate and expressive, based on principles of concrete poetry. Instruction in technique and materials will be given, interspersed by comprehensive slideshows of work by contemporary practitioners of the craft, and real examples of their work.

Participants will come away with:
- New techniques for creating hand-made type
- Knowledge of materials
- Introduction to the work of other practitioners
- A reading list
