Rotoroa Island, Rotoroa Island

All Ages

Ticket Information:

  • Free Admission

Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf, was once New Zealand’s first treatment centre for alcohol and drug addiction. Opening in 1911 as an 'inebriates' prison' managed by the Salvation Army, the island was ground-breaking in its approach to treatment, successfully offering first compulsory, then voluntary, addiction treatment services for nearly 100 years.

As part of this summer's Conservation Series, you've invited on a personalized walk and talk with the island's resident manager Phil Salisbury who also lived on the Island as a child. Hear stories from early Maori times and Salvation Army days through to today. Complementary tea and coffee included.

Note: the event is free of charge but ferry tickets incur a cost. See 360 Discovery Cruises for ferry bookings.
