Ride The Golden Mile is a campaign to promote the Renwick Rapaura 'Golden Mile' as a cycle-friendly destination open to all year round cycle touring.

It is a collective approach to promoting Marlborough by a cycle-friendly community of cellar doors and accommodation offering bike hire who are open all year round, and all easily accessible through short distance bike journey’s.

We invite you to ‘Ride Marlborough’s Golden Mile’, see the sights and visit the award-winning cellar doors in the Rapaura/Renwick area with a choice of 10 stops within 6km.

Partners
Hans Herzog, Vines Village (Eradus Wines, Fudge Factory), No1 Estate, Giesen Wines, Wairau River Wines, Forrest Wines, Framingham Wines, Gibson Bridge Wines, Seresin Wines, Explore Marlborough / Bike Hire Marlborough, Hillsfield House/Wine Tours By Bike, The Olde Mill House B&B/Bike 2 Wine Tours, The Vintners Retreat, The Vintners Hotel with support from Bike Walk Marlborough, Destination Marlborough, Blenheim Print & Deflux Design.

Why?
Cycling is an exciting, accessible and growing activity for the many visitors to Marlborough, and with the increasing availability of hire bikes there is a need to increase awareness of the easy short run routes available all year round for local and visiting cycle and potential cycle enthusiasts.

Cycle tourism is lucrative, as cyclists tend to stay longer and spend more. While industry figures indicate only 4 percent of international visitors do some sort of cycling, they spend $3800 during their time here compared with the average $2500. A fifth of those cycling spend more than $5500 (Source Patrick O'Meara, Economics Correspondent, Radio NZ 10Feb15).
How
Savour the world renowned Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc or it’s rising star Pinot Noir, fine refined Chardonnay’s or crisp Cuvee’s, along with local salmon, mussels, cheeses, honey, fudge and olive oil as you hop between the various vineyards and meet some of the character’s of Marlborough. Take the challenge to become a Golden Mile Champion through visiting the partner destinations to collect your stamps and claim the title and your gold medal!

Founder Jeff Fulton says ‘we are working as a collective of neighbouring cellar doors, accomodation and bike hire businesses to actively promote the Rapaura/Renwick area as a cycle friendly destination. We are all open 12 months a year and currently the seasonality of Marlborough makes winter a quieter time. As Marlborough is consistently one of the top recipient’s of maximum annual sunshine hours we see winter cycling as an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the province.

‘To be able to fly in to Blenheim and 5 minutes drive from the airport and be right amongst quality accommodation, bike hire options galore and world class cellar doors and dining is an attractive proposition to local and international visitors alike '.

Promotion
A simple smartphone friendly website with easily viewable map and partner profiles will be complimented by an A3 Brochure/ Souvenir Map. The creation of a cycle friendly map displaying beer, wine, food and activity spots and places of interest. A stamp field so cyclists can collect stamps and receive a free ‘Golden Mile Champion’ medal.

It is hoped that the many cyclists participating will drive the social media under the hashtag ridethegoldenmile and take home a medal as a permanent momento of their visit to this unique part of the world.

Launch - Sun March 8th 4pm
The lunch of the campaign is lined up for Sunday 8th March 2015 where partners, supporters and media are invited to get on their bikes and meet at The Vines Village, 193 Rapaura Rd for a medal ceremony. Live music from local band Big Scout in the outdoor theatre out back from 3pm.
