You are invited to come down to explore the Weka Point Outdoor Education Centre in Rissington. For a $2.00 donation families and the general public can look around, try out the massive waterslide, go for a swim and learn about all the latest developments in progress.

Since 1911 the campsite has been a huge asset the youth of Hawke’s Bay, often giving them their first camping experience. Weka Point Outdoor Education Centre has been managed by Scouts New Zealand since 1949.

“The campsite gives young people a chance to get outdoors, discover nature and at the same time have a great adventure away from the comforts of modern technology” says Scouts Waiapu Zone Spokesman, Daniel Koehler.

Weka Point sits on a peninsular surrounded by the Mangaone River and steep cliffs. Vehicles must remain above the campsite, while gear, food and tents are lowered by cableway to the flat camping area below. Foot access is by a track leading down to the Lions Swing Bridge across the Mangaone River. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

The day also coincides with Founder’s Day, which marks the anniversary of Lord Robert’s Baden-Powell’s (1857-1941) birth and there will be a short ceremony with Scout Groups taking part at 10am in the campsite’s outdoor chapel.

The waterslide and flying fox will operate from 10:30am and guided tours will take place at 12:30pm. Weka Point is located on Puketitiri Road, 1km past the Rissington Bridge. It is signposted.
