This exhibition draws parallels between the creative approaches of prolific poet Cilla McQueen and respected painter Joanna Paul. Similarities in the practices of these two individuals, who were known to each other, include a predilection for juxtaposing text and image that reveals their interdisciplinary approach to the arts and their enthusiastic adoption of the artist’s book format.

The works of both artists convey a sense of living intensely in the present moment. Their poetic and lyrical renderings in pen and pencil also offer a snapshot of the cultural milieu of Dunedin in the 1980s, a period when both women were recipients of University of Otago Arts Fellowships.
