On Wednesday 1 April 2015 at 5.30pm, international weaver, Patti Puhn will host a talk at Rotorua Museum.

Patti joins us in Rotorua from Washington State, USA as part of a Creative New Zealand Toi Sigwigwialt Artist exchange. She will be talking about her work featured in the Whiria – Weaving Global Connections exhibition and sharing some of her knowledge and experiences about her Squaxin Island culture.

Patti works for the Squaxin Island Tribe and comes from a family of weavers. Her weaving practice highlights the importance of preserving and enhancing her Squaxin culture, particularly the use of traditional methods and materials. In the Whiria exhibition Patti has a beautifully woven vest made from cedar bark which she will talk about along with other insights into her weaving practice.

Whiria, which means ‘to weave together’, features a wide variety of woven taonga (treasures) from private and public collections in New Zealand and the United States. It will showcase some of this country’s most respected weavers alongside highly skilled weavers from North West America, Hawai’i and Japan. Whiria is on display at Rotorua Museum from 28 March until 7 June 2015.

Entry to the talk is free of charge. For further information please contact Rotorua Museum, phone 07 350 1814 or email rotoruamuseum@rdc.govt.nz
