  • Free Admission

Come along to the New Zealand Pacific Studio, a non-profit residency centre open to artists and researchers all year round.

The historic Kaiparoro House, built in 1911, was converted into the centre in 2001.

There's a Norwegian-style cottage complete with a sauna, a Clockmaker's Loft with original tools and work bench, and more than 2,000 books to browse!

You can also meet our two artists in residence who will give short presentations of their work.

Melanie Carter- writer/educator
Melanie Carter, raised in Florida and a writing instructor at the American University of Cairo for over a decade, has settled into the Wairarapa community well -- reading her poetry to a mesmerized audience at Wairarapa Word, discussing her craft with Hugo Manson on Radio Ekehatuna, joining a monthly critique group with Wairarapa-based writers, and being part of a friendly artists' circle with other residents at NZPS. Melanie Carter will be a guest at Birds and Words, a special event with free entry (7am) at Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre on Friday 28 August, National Poetry Day -- all invited. She will also help facilitate creative writing workshops at New Zealand Pacific Studio, where she has been learning the art of making a fire.

Sunshine Herbert - illustrator/artist/designer
Sunshine describes herself as a fantastical, whimsy inspired artist, living amongst the cobbled streets of sunny Melbourne, Australia. As a self-taught artist, her work has been displayed in several national galleries and has sold internationally. With a couple of children’s books under her belt, she’s becoming obsessed with character development in her art and allowing her little people to live their own lives. Sunshine draws heavily on her love of fantasy and science fiction, a lifetime of dusty second hand bookshops and an obsessive urge to watch all the awesome tv series in one go. She just generally loves to paint, and aims to paint cool stuff she wants to see. She can just as easily be found reading fairytales on a train or being that weird girl that’s set up an easel in everyone's way.

And of course we'll have a cuppa together.
