Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre, 1170 Fenton St, Rotorua

All Ages

Rotorua is now preparing to host the National Concert Band Festival, which will be held in the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre, on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September this year.

Twenty five concert bands from as far south as Invercargill and as far north as Orewa will be travelling to Rotorua for the Festival. Sixteen are school bands. Nine are community bands. The largest band will have 60 musicians, the smallest 22, and over 900 musicians will be performing with their bands on the Civic Theatre stage. Some musicians will also be taking part in solos and ensemble performances in other Performing Arts Centre venues. The Rotorua Symphonic Band is the 2015 host Band and will also be performing on the Saturday.

Unlike a brass band, a concert band includes woodwind instruments as well as brass and percussion. So saxophones, clarinets, oboes, flutes and bassoons, join trumpets, trombones, euphoniums and tubas to fill out the wind section of the band. The New Zealand Army Band is a brass band, but the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, and the Royal New Zealand Navy Band are concert bands, and a feature of the National Concert Band Festival will be a concert by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band on Friday night at 7.30 pm

Festival Band performances commence at 9.00 am on Friday, and finish at 4.30 pm on Saturday. The Award Ceremony at 7.30 pm on Saturday will feature a performance by the New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds Band.

Public admission to the Festival will cost $5 per head, per day for an adult and $2 for a child (up to 16). A programme booklet is available for $2. Tickets for the Royal New Zealand Navy Band must be purchased from Ticketmaster. Ticket prices are: Adults $25; Seniors $23; Students $10; Children (up to 16) $5.
