Kander and Ebb's Cabaret, first performed in 1966, is a story of romance, scandal and desperation set against the backdrop of late-1920s Germany. It tells the story of Cliff Bradshaw, an American writer living in Berlin, and his fascination with English cabaret singer Sally Bowles. Cabaret chronicles both the changes in Cliff and Sally's relationship as they fall in and out of lust and love, and the subtle changes in the world around them as the Nazi Party begins to take power. The show touches on themes of identity, sexuality and politics, remaining relevant to a modern-day audience even as it recalls the past.

Cabaret will be a departure from recent MUSOC fare such as 2014's Gypsy and The Producers. Despite sharing a time period with the former and some thematic similarities with the latter, MUSOC's Cabaret will aim to show the seedy underbelly of musical theatre in a darker, edgier reimagining of the 1920s period.

Rather than showcasing the glitzy, brightly-lit dance numbers of previous years, Cabaret will rely on a small, tightly-knit cast and band to present an intimate, and at times unsettling, view of a well-trodden period of history. We intend to present a performance that is not only bold and confronting, but also moving and thought-provoking. Cabaret, with a dazzling script and score full of quotable lines and hummable tunes, is the perfect vehicle for bringing this vision to the students of the University of Canterbury and the wider public.
