Ruxton paints to make a difference.

On the surface Ruxton’s landscapes, still lifes and nudes are a favourable mixture of kiwi boldness softened by her interest in French Impressionism.

Scratch a little deeper and you will find her work layered in meaning. While painting in 2004 Ruxton painted a series of nudes. Each painting made a point or focus of the left breast. I year later Ruxton was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Ruxton explains, “Looking at them later I realised that I should have been more aware on a conscious level what I obviously knew deep down - that something was amiss in that breast. That’s the consciousness raising thing - we live in these bodies that we punish and ignore - when actually, when listened to and well cared for, a body becomes a better host for the spirit.”

Ruxton wants us to stop rushing, to take time out to listen to the tiny voice in the wilderness. Ruxton practices what she preaches. She moved to Tawharanui Peninsula near Matakana where the landscape has gently possessed her. She has also travelled to Europe, discovering the lesser known Musee des arts Decoratifs, beautiful works that struck a chord of unashamed beauty and a restrained colour palette that she infuses in her work. Her reference photos and surroundings provide continuous material that inspire and delight.

Stop by her exhibition at Railway Street Studios. Take a quiet moment to tune in to something apart from the everyday war zone that is modern day life.

10% of sales from the exhibition will be donated to Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition.
