Members of the public are invited to come and celebrate Matariki at NorthTec, with a full programme of events taking place at the Raumanga campus.

NorthTec is partnering with E Tu Whānau for the week, with all activities centred on the importance of whānau and aligning with the organisation’s values.

E Tu Whānau is a movement for positive change developed by Māori for Māori, and is about taking responsibility and action in the community and supporting whānau to thrive.

27 July at 11:30am - 1:30pm – Primary Schools Kapa Haka Event
Location: Te Puna o Te Matauranga Marae, Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
Four Whangarei schools will perform, giving the opportunity to celebrate Matariki with local tamariki mokopuna, upholding the value of Whakapapa – knowing who you are and where you belong. There will be a free sausage sizzle and Ngati Hine FM will be on hand to MC the event.

28 July – Living Te Maramataka Māori in 2015
Location: ILC Lecture Theatre (D340), Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
Well-known environmental activist Rueben Taipari and his wife, Heeni Shortland, will share their journey in establishing environmentally sustainable housing in the Far North. They will also talk about how they are implementing Māori customary practices of the Maramataka (Māori calendar) into the lives of their whānau. This event will take place at 10am at the Interactive Learning Centre, and represents the value of Tikanga – doing things according to traditional Māori values.

28 July – Waka Ama “Get Out On The Water”
Location: Beach Road, Onerahi (by the Onerahi Yacht Club)
Open to all ages and abilities, and hosted by the Mitamitaga Ole Pasefika Vaaalo Canoe Club. A hearty soup will be provided for all participants.

29 July – RAID Movement Day. “Whanaungatanga”
Location: Te Puna o Te Matauranga Marae, Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
NorthTec hosts the RAID Movement to talk about how everyone can support suicide prevention in our communities. Entertainment will be provided by popular local soul singer, Ben Ratima.

29 July – Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori “Po Wero Hinengaro”
Location: ILC Lecture Theatre (D340), Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
Māori language trivial pursuits evening, starting at 5pm at the Interactive Learning Centre. This fun event will see teams battling for the ultimate prize of being crowned the NorthTec Matariki Po Wero Hinengaro champions! It costs $30 to register a team of up to six people, payable on the night, with supper provided. To register a team, contact Kelly Heke on 09-470 3801 or via kheke@northtec.ac.nz.

30 July – Stories of Change and Transformation
Location: ILC Lecture Theatre (D340), Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
A diverse series of speakers coming together to form the Mana/Manaaki event – building the mana of others through nurturing, growing and challenging. These are speakers with stories of change and transformation, hosted by E Tu Whānau. Speakers include Christian Huriwai, an extreme unicyclist from Kaikohe; Rob Akahuta, Relationship Manager for E Tu Whānau; Johnny Seve, Whānau Ora Facilitator for Ngāti Hau Health and Social Services; Rt Hon Winston Peters, leader of NZ First and the MP for Northland.

30 July – E TU Whānau Matariki Buffet
Location: Te Puna o Te Matauranga Marae, Gate 1, NorthTec Raumanga Campus
Celebrate the value of Aroha – the gift of giving and sharing, and will be a Matariki buffet hosted by E Tu Whānau at Te Puna o Te Matauranga Marae. Starting at 5pm, tickets for the buffet cost $25 and there will again be live music from Ben Ratima. For bookings email eball@northtec.ac.nz or phone 09-470 3779.
