To contribute to the celebration of New Zealand’s great doyen of composition, Douglas Lilburn, we present a chamber music and violin recital ‘Douglas Lilburn in context’.

Alongside two of Lilburn’s instrumental masterpieces, the Violin Sonata and Nine Short Pieces for Piano, is a selection of repertoire that highlights Lilburn’s unique and complexly lyrical contribution to the world of music.

This includes two pieces written around the time those works of Lilburn: Bartok’s brilliantly conceived Hungarian (gypsy)/jazz combo ‘Contrasts’ for violin, clarinet, and piano; and Prokofiev’s warmly songful second violin sonata. Highly characterized music rounds out the program, with offerings by Schumann, Ravel and Debussy (whose Golliwog’s Cakewalk receives the tango treatment) as well as two brief recent compositions by the violinist of the evening, Mark Menzies.
Menzies, a graduate of Canterbury University, has a worldwide career connecting with audiences, frequently offering recently written compositions alongside highly spirited interpretations of older repertoire.

Joining Menzies will be young Italian-born pianist Flavio Villani, well-respected for a burgeoning career as a collaborative and solo pianist, and renowned clarinettist Gretchen La Roche who is currently also artistic and general director of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
