Innovation and the artistic endeavours of six resident artists

Two years on and thousands of brushstrokes later, the Railway Street Studios resident artists exhibit together again in Manifest. The strength of the work evidences that mastery is not something that strikes in an instant, but gathers power as it moves on. At times artists experience moments of being in the zone and experience sparks of genius, however it is consistent work that reaps growth and results. The various new pieces selected by each artist from the gathering momentum of their work together comprise an artistic cargo manifest.

Each painting presented here has its own story of origin and destination. Each artist has mined his/her own life experience, utilising their intuition and intellect to present exceptional work. Kathryn Carter’s light filled seasonally changing landscapes have sensitivity as well as bold colouring, referencing the passage of time. Paul Screach continues his abstraction of the human form, incorporating the interaction between language and imagery, in a world where they are in a state of constant collision. Peter Atkinson continues to deepen his immersion in the poetics of light and shadow, while Sarah Dwyer remains steadfast on flora, pushing the boundaries of mediums and self expression, bringing vibrancy to her work. Alex Howe’s new body of landscape explores the South Island winter light from her recent plein air excursions while Christine Arvidson’s avid imagination has us in fanciful flight through her use of collage and signature scroll motif.

Art matters when you say something essential about things you really care about. Manifest stands for the innovation and the artistic endeavours of six resident artists who have toiled away at their practice, creating work that gives form to their inner reality.
